Major power boost for CQ coal ports

Work is set to start on a $76 million power upgrade to support the continued expansion of coal export facilities at Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay, Energy Minister Geoff Wilson announced today.

The Ergon Energy project will involve the construction of a new 10km, 132,000-volt power line between an existing Powerlink substation at Alligator Creek and a new Ergon zone substation at Louisa Creek near Hay Point.

Mr Wilson said preliminary earth works would start early next month, and the project was scheduled to be completed in June 2009.

“The coal industry is a driving force behind Queensland’s booming economy,” Mr Wilson said.

“Unprecedented international demand, coupled with strong coal prices, points towards continued strength and success in the future for the Queensland coal-export industry.

“This major project will not only cater for current and future demand for power for coal exporters but will also improve the quality and reliability of supply to the surrounding local communities,” Mr Wilson said.

The new transmission line between the two substations will be a collaborative effort between Powerlink and Ergon Energy to avoid duplication of lines, reducing both the visual and environmental impact.

Communities to benefit from the upgrade include Rosella, Dalrymple Bay, Louisa Creek, Alligator Creek, Hay Point, Sarina, Koumala, Ilbilbie, Carmilla, Eton, and Balberra.

Mr Wilson said when designing the line route every effort had been made to minimise visual and other impacts as well ensuring public safety.

“The new substation at Louisa Creek will replace the existing facility and will be of an attractive, modern design. It will have an incoming supply of 132,000 volts and will have outgoing 33,000 and 11,000 volt feeders to service customer requirements.”

Ergon Energy is undertaking an extensive community and stakeholder briefing process to ensure residents who may be impacted by the project are informed as much as possible.

“The benefits of this project will be appreciated by major energy customers at Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay and the broader local community for years to come.”
