DPP Announcement Heralds New Era for Prosecutions: Shine
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said he’s looking forward to working with Queensland’s new Director of Public Prosecutions, Tony Moynihan SC, to address issues affecting prosecution services in Queensland.
Mr Shine announced Mr Moynihan’s appointment today to replace Judge Leanne Clare, who was recently appointed to the District Court after eight years as the DPP.
“Mr Moynihan is a highly respected Barrister with 17 years legal experience including service as a Crown Prosecutor within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and as the Deputy Public Defender with Legal Aid Queensland,” Mr Shine said.
“He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2006 which reflects the respect with which he is held by our most senior legal authorities.”
Mr Shine said Mr Moynihan was chosen from a quality field of candidates for the position.
“Mr Moynihan was the stand out candidate and I believe he will perform the role of Director of Public Prosecutions with distinction.”
Mr Shine said Mr Moynihan has an important job of addressing a number of issues surrounding prosecutions in Queensland and he was looking forward to working with the new DPP on those issues.
“The Bligh Government has already announced an initial allocation of $3.5 million over four years to assist the ODPP to employ more prosecutors,” he said.
“The Treasurer also indicated in his budget speech that an assessment of future funding for the DPP is an early priority for the Government this financial year.”
“I have spoken to Mr Moynihan and he has expressed to me some of his ideas about potential changes which can improve efficiencies within the office of the DPP.
“I look forward to continuing our discussions and working towards our mutual goal of a strong prosecution service for all Queenslanders.”
Mr Shine said Mr Moynihan will start his new role on 23rd June.
