Queensland shares stage with Korean Prime Minister for International Boat Show opening

Minister for Trade John Mickel shared the stage with Korean Prime Minister Seung-Soo Han, and Gyeonggi Province Governor Moon-Soo Kim yesterday to jointly open the inaugural Korea International Boat Show (10-15 June).

“The mutual value of Queensland’s relationship with Korea, as illustrated by our strong Sister State relationship with Gyeonggi Province, was underlined by the presence today of the Prime Minister at the joint opening of this most prestigious event,” Mr Mickel said.

Minister Mickel met with Prime Minister Seung-Soo Han at the official opening function of the Boat Show. Minister Mickel and the Governor also hosted the special Queensland Marine Industry Seminar following the opening, highlighting the State’s marine industry credentials and capabilities.

“The seminar was very significant for Queensland as our State delegation is the only international visitor group to be invited to hold a promotional event at the Korea International Boat Show,” Mr Mickel said.

“The large Queensland marine delegation representing 17 businesses at the Korea International Boat Show is a further reflection of Queensland’s high-level marine expertise and our strong relationship with Korea,” he said.

The inaugural Korea International Boat Show boasts more than 230 exhibitors including more than 120 overseas companies from a total of 21 countries. Queensland companies exhibiting include Riviera and Sunseeker.

Boat Show organisers anticipate around 40 000 visitors to the four day event, which coincides with the Korea Match Cup yachting tournament.

The West Coast of Gyeonggi Province is ripe for marine development with over 252 kilometres of coastline and around 11 million people living within 150km of the Boat Show venue.

There are currently 4 marinas and around 4000 registered leisure boats in Korea. New private and government investment is supporting the construction of 4 new marina projects in Gyeonggi (to be completed over the next four years with a total of 1000 berths) and another 38 around the country.

Korea has excellent potential for growth to become one of the key leisure boating markets in Asia.
