Queensland schools successful in first computer round

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement today that 70 Queensland schools have been successful in the first round of the National Secondary School Computer Fund.

“The Federal Government’s Digital Education Revolution recognises that computers have become essential tools for today’s students,” Mr Welford said.

“Increasingly, all students, no matter what career path they may choose, need to know how to use computers and information communication technology (ICT) to be successful.

“In this first round of funding, about $100 million is being allocated to the schools most in need of ICT investment.

“Fewer Queensland schools are receiving funding under this first round than other states and territories because our schools generally have a good computer to student ratio.

“Schools with fewer computers for students were invited to apply for funding in this round.

“Queensland schools are leading the way in ICT investment so our schools are less in need of computers than schools in other states.

“This funding will enable these schools to bring their computer to student ratio up to 1 computer for every two students. It’s only right that schools most in need are brought up to speed first.

“Schools will be able to purchase laptops, desktop computers, and other technologies to help students engage better with ICT.

“Further Queensland schools will be invited to apply to the $1.1 billion National Secondary School Fund in future rounds.”

Queensland state schools receiving funding in this round are: Caboolture State High School

Capalaba State College; Chinchilla State High School; Crow's Nest State School; Cunnamulla State School; Earnshaw State College; Gladstone State High School; Kepnock State High School; Mackay State High School; Mount Larcom State School; Quinalow State School; and Townsville State High School.

“Our Government looks forward to working with the Federal Government to implement the Digital Education Revolution,” Mr Welford. “All Queensland students, no matter where they live, should have access to the learning tools they need to succeed in life.

“The Federal Government’s commitment to provide new or upgraded information and communications technology (ICT) for secondary schools with students in Years 9 to 12 complements our $70 million four-year commitment to provide laptops to state school and TAFE teachers.”
