The Honourable John Mickel
Queensland and Gyeongnam Province to strengthen relationship
Queensland and Korea’s Gyeongnam Province are to promote closer cooperation on marine developments.
Minister for Trade John Mickel today announced that Gyeongnam Governor Tae Ho Kim will visit Queensland later this year.
“The Governor’s visit will help to build closer relationships with the Queensland Government and businesses supplying marine industry products, services and expertise built up over many years,” Mr Mickel said.
“The Queensland Government looks forward to hosting Governor Kim who has been at the forefront of developing the marine and marina industries in Gyeongnam and at the national level in Korea.
Minister Mickel is leading a trade mission to Korea to profile Queensland’s market expertise at the inaugural Korea International Boat Show.
He reassured Gyeongnam officials that Queensland has the knowledge, skills and capability under the strict Australian marina development standard guidelines to assist Gyeongnam in becoming a top-class maritime leisure industry hub.
“Meeting today with Gyeongnam Province leaders including Vice Governor Mr Chang Hee Lee gave me the opportunity to thank them for the friendship they continue to foster with Queensland, and particularly with our marine industries.
Mr Mickel led representatives from Queensland’s 17-strong Korea International Boat Show 2008 marine businesses delegation – the largest State delegation from Australia – on a visit to 6 of the 8 marine developments currently underway in Gyeongnam with an expected A$210 million development budget over the next 10 years.
The delegation visited the A$9 million Goseong Marina Project at Gusan Bay, Tongyeong Port (Tonyeong Marine), Geoje Bridge, Haegeumgang (National Marine Park), Oedo Island and Geoje Janseungpo Bay, helping to pitch Queensland’s marine capabilities to Provincial Government officials.
“I am confident that by undertaking the marine project site visits today our Queensland marine businesses will gain a unique insight into Gyeongnam’s marine vision for the future and a unique opportunity to take advantage of significant prospects for Queensland for export and investment,” Mr Mickel said.
