The Honourable John Mickel
Brisbane companies are well-represented on a Queensland Government trade mission to present the State’s world-class marine capabilities at the 2008 Korea International Boat Show.
“Eight Brisbane-based marine industry companies have joined our trade mission to attend the inaugural Korea International Boat Show which runs from 10 to 15 June 2008,” said Minister for Trade John Mickel.
“While the Gold Coast and Cairns are widely recognised as hubs for marine industries within Queensland, Australia’s premier marine industries state, it is important to remember that Brisbane is also home to a number of thriving marine-based businesses and industries with export capabilities,” Mr Mickel said.
“Brisbane businesses taking part in the Korea International Boat Show include Lawmar Pty Ltd, McDowall-based marina designers and marine project managers, and Bellingham, marina construction specialists based at Seventeen Mile Rocks.
“Other businesses taking part include Polyflex, makers of quality marine specialised mounting products including engine and instrument mounts, and Jo Wooler’s Mojocreations stainless art business. Both businesses are based at Redcliffe.
“Southside and Bayside businesses are also well represented with artist Greg Wardle from Wellington Point, Hemmant-based New Wave Catamarans and Sea Speed Design, and Manly’s Southern Cross Yachting marine training service also making the journey to take part in the Korea International Boat Show.
“As this is the inaugural event in Korea, it is an excellent opportunity for Brisbane’s marine businesses to gain ground-floor access to a market that is expected to boom over the next 5 to 10 years.
“The large Queensland marine delegation of 17 companies at the Korea International Boat Show is a reflection of Queensland’s high-level marine expertise as well as the close relationship between Queensland and Gyeonggi Province, underpinned by our Sister State relationship,” said Mr Mickel.
The West Coast of Gyeonggi Province is ripe for marine development with over 252 kilometres of coastline and around 11 million people living within 150 kilometres of the Boat Show venue.
“I have no doubt that participating in the trade mission will assist these Brisbane businesses to receive favourable consideration as they compete in the future for business in this growing market in South Korea,” Mr Mickel said.
Mr Mickel today (11 June) opened the Korea International Boat Show alongside Gyeonggi Governor Moon-Soo Kim. He will also host the Governor at a special Queensland Marine Industry Seminar this afternoon to be attended by participating Queensland marine businesses and guest speakers to highlight Queensland’s considerable marine industry export credentials and capabilities.
