The Honourable John Mickel

Mackay marine expertise on sale at Korea International Boat Show

Mackay and the Whitsunday coast are represented on a Queensland Government trade mission to present the State’s world-class marine capabilities to the 2008 Korea International Boat Show.

“A Mackay-based marine-related industry company has joined our trade mission to attend the Korea International Boat Show which runs from 10 to 15 June 2008,” said Minister for Trade John Mickel.

“Mrs Julie Boyd, the newly appointed Queensland Government Special Representative to South Korea, and former Mackay Mayor, is also joining the Minister’s trade mission.

“The Gold Coast, Cairns and Brisbane are already widely recognised as hubs for marine industries within Queensland, Australia’s premier marine industries state. It is pleasing to see a business from Mackay with export capabilities keen to have a crack at the Korea market,” Mr Mickel said.

“With Mackay’s proximity to the Whitsundays and some of Queensland’s most magnificent coastline, it is ideally situated as a base for businesses that supply world-class products and services for the marine industry both locally and internationally.

“The Mackay business taking part in the Korea International Boat Show Port Binnli has undertaken and constructed a number of waterside developments in Queensland, including Mackay Marina, Whitsunday Bay and Raby Bay in Brisbane. Port Binnli is also well advanced with planning for their Shute Harbour marina project that is currently moving through the environmental impact study process.

“As this is the inaugural event in Korea, it is an excellent opportunity for Port Binnli to obtain ground-floor access to a market that is expected to boom over the next 5 to 10 years.

“The large Queensland marine delegation of seventeen companies at the Korea International Boat Show is a reflection of Queensland’s high-level marine expertise as well as the close relationship between Queensland and Gyeonggi Province, underpinned by our Sister State relationship,” said Mr Mickel.

The West Coast of Gyeonggi Province is ripe for marine development with over 252 kilometres of coastline and around 11 million people living within 150 kilometres of the Boat Show venue.

“I have no doubt that participating in the trade mission will assist Port Binnli to receive favourable consideration as they compete in the future for business in this growing market in South Korea,” Mr Mickel said.

Minister Mickel today (11 June) opened the Korea International Boat Show alongside Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-Soo. He will also host the Governor at a special Queensland Marine Industry Seminar this afternoon to be attended by participating Queensland marine businesses and guest speakers to highlight Queensland’s considerable marine industry export credentials and capabilities.
