The Honourable Rod Welford
Something to warm every interest at Cultural Centre this winter
Arts Minister Rod Welford today welcomed a second edition of the popular Cultural Centre booklet which highlights the world-class arts and entertainment activities on at South Bank this winter.
Mr Welford said Cultural Centre: Winter in Brisbane, showcased the precinct as one of the nation’s premier cultural tourism destinations, offering unique performance, exhibition, shopping and dining experiences.
“The Cultural Centre had more than 3.6 million visits in the past year, with people drawn by exclusive exhibitions such as Andy Warhol, imaginative children’s programming, internationally acclaimed performers and access to the state’s best heritage and learning facilities, as well as unique places to eat, shop, picnic and play,” Mr Welford said.
“Boasting Australia’s largest modern art gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), the redeveloped State Library of Queensland, the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum South Bank and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), the Cultural Centre has something for every taste and interest.
“This pocket-sized, 112-page booklet is a comprehensive guide to all the activities taking place across the five sites from June until the end of August and is an essential companion for locals and visitors alike.”
Mr Welford said the winter line-up built on the Cultural Centre’s spectacular summer program.
“GoMA is hosting the exclusive Picasso & his collection exhibition, on show outside Europe for the first time, and featuring more than 100 works by Picasso and the artists who influenced him, including Matisse, Renoir, Cézanne and Modigliani,” he said.
“The Queensland Art Gallery is exploring the work of Australian icon Sidney Nolan with the first retrospective of his work since the artist’s death in 1992.
“Queensland Museum is paying tribute to 100 years of rugby league with its exhibition League of Legends and the State Library is sharing its treasure of artists’ books and staging Boom Bah!, a live performance of the popular children’s book.
“It’s also busy at QPAC, which is hosting the In Stitches comedy festival and the internationally renowned Out of the Box Festival for three to eight year olds, as well as productions of Edward Scissorhands, The Mikado and My Fair Lady.”
