Out of the Box Festival makes it Cultural Centre for kids

Arts Minister Rod Welford has handed over the Cultural Centre to a generation of creative kids for the next six days, for the Out of the Box Festival for 3 to 8 year olds.

Mr Welford said the 2008 Out of the Box Festival, from 10-15 June, would ignite creativity among children and give them access to affordable creative activities, performances and workshops.

“Since its inception in 1992, Out of the Box, produced by the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), has grown in popularity,” Mr Welford said.

“More than 60,000 children, parents, teachers and carers expected to attend this year’s event.

“Out of the Box has a national and international reputation for creating and presenting the highest quality arts experiences specifically for young audiences.

“Highlights for this year’s event including an epic theatre performance called Gondwana and the welcome return to the Brisbane stage of actor Deborah Mailman.”

Mr Welford said 2008 was a milestone year for the festival, with the event extending across the entire Cultural Centre for the first time.

“This will give children the chance to explore their creativity at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), the Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland Museum at South Bank, the State Library of Queensland and QPAC,” he said.

“With the collaboration of the entire cultural precinct, children now have even more space to play and perform with additional activities to stimulate them.”

Mr Welford congratulated festival director Mark Radvan on his program for the 2008 festival which features music, workshops, exhibitions, movies, animation and storytelling.

Activities across the Cultural Centre include – Beeware, based on the book by Queensland author Pat Flynn, at The Edge auditorium at the State Library of Queensland; the Megaphone Project at the Knowledge walk; Critters Workshop at Queensland Museum; Different Faces, One Smile workshops, Queensland Art Gallery, which also has tours for children; and the animated film The King and the Mockingbird in GoMA’s Australian Cinematheque.

Tickets are $16 per person for workshops and $18 per person for performances, with discounts for school groups. There are also some free activities. For further information and to book, visit the website www.outoftheboxfestival.com.au or phone qtix on 136 246.
