Hospital Road-Clermont Street road corridor draft plan released

Emerald residents will get their first look at a proposed upgrade of the Hospital Road-Clermont Street road corridor this week, when community consultation begins on a draft corridor plan.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the draft plan would form the basis of broad consultation with the Emerald community.

“The draft corridor plan shows the improvements we plan to make along Hospital Road and Clermont Street in the future, to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing Emerald population,” Mr Pitt said.

The concept plan outlines a draft design for the upgrade between Racecourse Road and Opal Street, and highlights future plans for the introduction of traffic signals at key intersections along the corridor.

“The draft corridor plan includes improvements that will provide sufficient road capacity to cater for future traffic growth, maintain effective local access and improve the safety of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists,” Mr Pitt said.

The draft plan includes restricting right-hand turns from some side streets entering the corridor to improve safety, with local access maintained through the introduction of traffic signals at Opal Street, Ruby Street, Curt Street and Harris Street/Egan Street.

New cycle lanes and safe signalised pedestrian crossings on Hospital Road are also included.

Mr Pitt said the draft plan would see the introduction of Emerald’s first set of traffic signals, at the Ruby Street and Egerton Street intersection.

“Safer Roads Sooner funding – which directs traffic camera fine revenue towards high-priority road safety improvements – has already been allocated towards these signals in 2009-10,” he said.

Mr Pitt said Main Roads was seeking comments and suggestions from the community, ahead of finalisation of the concept plan.

“Feedback from the community will help Main Roads refine the draft plans, and ensure we achieve the best planning outcome for this important road corridor,” he said.

“Consultation starts next week, with members of the project team available to speak with community members at the Emerald Village Shopping Centre on Thursday 12 June between 10am and 7pm, and Saturday 14 June between 10am and 2pm, and I invite all local residents to come along.”

The plans will also be displayed from Thursday 12 June to Thursday 26 June at:
• Central Highlands Regional Council, 65 Egerton Street Emerald
• Main Roads Central Highlands District Office, 83 Osmond Street, Emerald
