Overpass to provide a safer crossing on Yaamba Road

Main Roads has responded to community feedback and will build an $8 million overpass to improve pedestrian safety on Yaamba Road.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt, Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten and Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan announced today that the overpass would link the split campuses of Emmaus College, one of three schools identified as needing dedicated pedestrian overpass or underpass facilities by a 2007 Queensland Government review.

Mr Pitt said community consultation had been undertaken to decide whether an overpass or an underpass represented the best option.

"The safety of all road users is Main Roads' number one priority and this overpass will provide a safe facility for students and other pedestrians to cross busy Yaamba Road," he said.

Mr Schwarten said consultation had occurred with Emmaus College and the local community about pedestrian crossing options for Yaamba Road, with about 95 per cent of those consulted favouring the overpass option.

"The community will be a clear winner out of this project and we’re delighted to be able to announce that work could start as early as March 2009,” he said.

Mr Hoolihan said the overpass design would feature an enclosed overhead walkway with protective screens to protect users and vehicles.

"The overpass will also be accessible via both lifts and stairs 24 hours a day. Construction is expected to take about nine months to complete, meaning the overpass should open for the start of the 2010 school year,” he said.

The Bligh Government has also committed to providing dedicated pedestrian overpass or underpass facilities at the Mabel Park schools at Logan and St Mary's College in Warwick.
