PREMIER PRAISES 99 OUTSTANDING QUEENSLANDERS
Representing fields as diverse as medical research, conservation, religious life, infrastructure and care for indigenous women Premier Anna Bligh today congratulated 99 Queenslanders recognised in the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
“These great Queensland men and women have worked tirelessly in our communities, their professions and their industries,” said Ms Bligh.
“From serving a life of priestly service, to the law, health and education, to their dedication in research and community service, we are proud of them and their respective roles for making for a better Queensland and Australia,” she said.
Queensland recipients of the Order of Australia (AO) include:
? The Most Reverend John Bathersby for service to the Catholic Church in Australia, particularly as Archbishop of Brisbane and
? Professor Michael Good for service to medical research, particularly in the fields of infectious disease immunology and vaccine technology, through leadership roles at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and contributions to education.
Queenslanders recognised as Members of the Order of Australia (AM) include,
Gerald Barry, Brian Bertwistle, Michael Berwick,
Sister Mary Coghlan, Ms Sue Cumming, John Dawson,
Emeritus Professor David Doddrell, Arthur Frame, Dr Robert Greenhill RFD,
Mal Grierson, Dr Janet Hammill, Edward Howard OBE OAM,
Professor Sandra McLean, Professor Patrick O'Keefe, Justin O'Sullivan,
Professor Anthony Parker, Dr Glen Postle, Dr John Roulston,
Dr Marie Siganto, Anthony South OAM, Professor Russell Stitz RFD,
Barry Thornton, and Bruce Wilson.
Queenslanders have also been acknowledged in other honour divisions including Medal in the Order of Australia – OAM, public service and military medals.
“I’m sure that all Queenslanders will join me in congratulating each and every one of the 99. They are leaders making life better in Queensland and, in many cases, around the world,” said the Premier.
