The Honourable Rod Welford

Picasso & his collection Lecture Tour in regional Queensland

Audiences in regional Queensland can get a taste of Picasso & his collection, which officially opened at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) today, through a regional Lecture Tour organised to complement the exhibition.

Arts Minister Rod Welford said the Picasso & his collection Lecture Tour would be presented by Queensland Art Gallery staff at up to 20 regional centres including Gladstone, Mackay, Cairns and Toowoomba.

“The series of free public lectures will be hosted by regional galleries from 20 June to 20 August,” Mr Welford said.

“The illustrated lectures offer audiences in regional and remote areas an insight into the ideas and themes central to the Picasso & his collection exhibition.

“The talks will also detail Picasso’s inspirations, personal friendships and influences. This Lecture Tour will be the perfect accompaniment to the exhibition in Brisbane.”

Mr Welford encouraged regional audiences to visit GoMA for the exclusive Picasso & his collection exhibition, between 9 June and 14 September.

“Curated by the Director of the musée national Picasso in Paris, this is the first exhibition of Picasso’s personal art collection outside Europe,” he said.

“Hot on the heels of the Andy Warhol exhibition, this is yet another cultural coup for GoMA and I encourage all Queenslanders to experience it.

“This exhibition has been developed by the musée national Picasso in association with the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Exhibitions Australia.

“Our Government has supported the exhibition through Queensland Events Corporation, Tourism Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Exhibition Indemnity Scheme.”

Picasso & his collection was also made possible by Art Indemnity Australia, an Australian Government program through which the Commonwealth acts as insurer.

Mr Welford said the exhibition included more than 100 works from Picasso's extraordinary personal collection plus more than 80 important works by the artist himself.

“In addition to paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures from the 17th through to the late 20th century by more than 35 artists including Matisse, Renoir, Cézanne and Miro, there are Oceanic and African works dating from the sixth century BCE,” he said.
