The Honourable Anna Bligh

Premier Anna Bligh today opened the first exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s personal art collection outside Europe at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane.

Ms Bligh said Picasso & his collection, showing exclusively at GoMA until 14 September, was a cultural coup for Queensland and one of the most important arts event in Australia this year.

“Since opening in 2006 GoMA has presented exclusive international exhibitions of two of the 20thcentury’s greatest artists – Andy Warhol and now Pablo Picasso,” Ms Bligh said.

“It’s a huge coup for the gallery to get this exhibition and a testament to its growing reputation around the world.

“Curated by Anne Baldassari, Director of musée national Picasso in Paris, Picasso & his collection is a unique opportunity for Queensland audiences to experience the artist’s inspirations and influences and for all generations to learn more about this great artist.”

Arts Minister Rod Welford said the exhibition included more than 100 key works from Picasso’s extraordinary personal art collection plus more than 80 works by Picasso himself and documentary photographs.

“The state government’s $291 million investment in the redeveloped Cultural Centre has certainly been an important factor in the Gallery’s ability to attract these major exhibitions,” Mr Welford said.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to get along to GoMA in the coming months to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.”

More than 35 artists including Matisse, Renoir, Cézanne, Miro, as well as Oceanic and African works are involved in the exhibition.

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the exhibition included paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from the 17th to late 20th century.

Master works by Picasso such as Tête de femme (Head of a woman) 1921 and Nu dans un jardin (Nude in a garden) 1934, Paul Cézanne’s Cinq baigneuses (Five bathers) 1877–78, Henri Matisse’s Nature morte aux oranges ou Corbeille d’oranges (Still life with oranges or Basket of oranges) 1912 will be displayed in Australia for the first time.

Queensland Government supports the exhibition through its core funding of the Queensland Art Gallery and through Queensland Events Corporation, Tourism Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Exhibition Indemnity Scheme.

Picasso & his collection was also made possible by Art Indemnity Australia, an Australian Government program through which the Commonwealth acts as insurer.

In conjunction with Picasso & his collection, the Gallery is presenting a film program, children’s and education programs, regional lecture tour and Up Late series.

Ticket and accommodation packages are also available for visitors to Brisbane during the exhibition. For more information please visit www.qag.qld.gov.au/picasso
