Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
The State Government has recast the staging of roadworks along the Centenary Highway to allow the Bullockhead Street off-ramp at Sumner to stay open until late 2009.
Main Roads Minister Mr Pitt and Member for Mount Ommaney Julie Attwood said the 15-month reprieve was good news for Sumner Park Industrial Estate business owners.
Mr Pitt and Mrs Attwood met with business representatives of the Sumner Park Industrial Estate at Parliament House this week to outline the plan that will allow the permanent closure of the off-ramp to be delayed.
Under the new plan, a temporary off-ramp will be constructed to provide the industrial estate with a second entry point for an extra year.
“This has been a very complex issue but I am pleased that we have been able to come up with a solution that provides a positive result for business owners and motorists,” Mr Pitt said.
“This interim solution, which will cost about $3 million, has been negotiated with the contractor after strong lobbying by the Member for Mount Ommaney and the business owners.”
Mrs Attwood said delaying the permanent closure of the Bullockhead Street off-ramp provided Brisbane City Council with extra time to advance plans for an alternative access road into the industrial estate.
“Main Roads will work closely with the council to ensure the planning and construction of a second entry and exit point to the industrial estate along Wolston Road and Wacol Station Road can be progressed as quickly as possible,” she said.
“Main Roads is continuing discussions with Brisbane City Council about timeframes for the proposal, including the possibility of bringing construction forward.”
Mrs Attwood said the existing Bullockhead Street ramp would still need to close for a few months from August 2008 to allow works around the off-ramp to be completed.
“These works, which will be completed as quickly as possible, will involve construction of the new temporary off-ramp that will provide a secondary access for an extra year.
As part of the Ipswich Motorway upgrade from Wacol to Darra, the existing Bullockhead Street off-ramp on the Centenary Highway northbound at Sumner must eventually close for safety reasons.
