Rugby League exhibition kicks off at Queensland Museum

Arts Minister Rod Welford has encouraged sports fans to visit the Queensland Museum South Bank from today for the League of Legends: 100 Years of Rugby League exhibition.
Mr Welford said the free exhibition would run from 6 June – 10 August, opening just in time for State of Origin 2 at Suncorp Stadium.

“The Queensland Museum is the ideal place for league fans to immerse themselves in the history of the game and to celebrate the centenary of Rugby League,” Mr Welford said.

“Visitors will be able to see a tremendous collection of memorabilia including coveted trophies and shields, representing the past 100 years of the game.

“Of great interest for Queenslanders is an original program for the 1908 state season, Artie Beetson's 1980 State of Origin jersey, Queensland's Winfield Cup 1982-95 and the Broncos' grand final jersey worn by Darren Lockyer in 2000.

“Let’s hope the pride and passion revealed by the exhibition will also inspire the Maroons to victory next Wednesday night.”

CEO of Queensland Museum Dr Ian Galloway said the exhibition made for a great day out for the whole family.

“League was established as a breakaway football competition in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union,” Dr Galloway said.

“This exhibition examines the game, both behind the scenes and on the field, from its extraordinary origins to today, revealing the emotional rollercoaster of triumph and despair that is at the heart of all great sporting contests.”

Objects on display include the Royal Agricultural Society Shield recalling the great Dally Messenger, the Courtney Goodwill Trophy, State of Origin Shield and radio commentator Frank Hyde’s binoculars and folding card table from which he called games for 30 years.

League of Legends: 100 Years of Rugby League is a travelling exhibition developed and presented by the National Museum of Australia in conjunction with the Centenary of Rugby League Committee.

The exhibition will also travel north, showing at Queensland Museum’s Townsville campus, the Museum of Tropical Queensland from 18 December 2008 – 8 March 2009.
