Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
A massive $445 million expansion and refurbishment of Lotus Glen Correctional Centre is set to begin.
Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said: “The 2008-09 State Budget allocated $118.3 million in funding to progress the project during the next 12 months.
“The project is part of a massive program of correctional centre upgrades across Queensland to accommodate a growing prisoner population.
“Other current projects include the $270 million refurbishment of Townsville Correctional Centre and construction of a new Townsville Women’s Correctional Centre; a $110 million refurbishment and expansion of Brisbane Correctional Centre (formerly known as Sir David Longland Correctional Centre; a $55 million upgrade to Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre; and the $485 million south-east Queensland correctional precinct in the Lockyer Valley.
“The 300-bed expansion at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre will be built outside the existing perimeter. The perimeter will then be changed to amalgamate the existing centre and the expansion within the one perimeter.
“The refurbishment and expansion will mean about 140 new jobs at the centre, taking staffing levels upon completion to about 450 staff.
“A range of new facilities in the expansion include three 100-bed cell blocks and new programs and medical buildings, four industry workshops, a gatehouse, sports hall, visitor processing and staff amenities building and a 24-bed low security (farm) accommodation building.
“The refurbishment of existing facilities will focus on kitchen and staff dining areas, visits, prisoner processing, administration, bulk store, laundry, sports hall, education buildings, staff training facilities, cell blocks B and C, two industry areas, dog squad, staff and visitor car parking and an upgrade of the road between the centre and low security (farm) facility.
“The expansion is scheduled for completion by late 2011 and will give the centre a capacity of close to 700 beds.
“The master plan and schematic design have been completed for the expansion and the Department of Public Works have invited tenders for the managing contractor role,” Ms Spence said.
