Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Five-year plan for Wide Bay/Burnett roads

Improving regional road networks is the focus of funding in the Wide Bay/Burnett Region, as part of a record $16.2 billion five-year roads program released by the Bligh Government today.

The Roads Implementation Program 2008-09 to 2012-13 outlines a $16.2 billion infrastructure investment for Queensland's roads over the next five years, including $670 million for Wide Bay/Burnett Region road projects.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the program—a 22 per cent increase on last year's program—highlighted record funding for regional, rural and remote areas of the state.

“The latest Roads Implementation Program looks over the horizon as part of our longer-term planning for the future of our state’s road network,” Mr Pitt said.

“This government is building tomorrow’s Queensland today and we have allocated a record funding program to achieve this objective,” he said.

“This record funding includes some $670 million in projects that will improve the safety, capacity and reliability of roads in and around the Wide Bay/Burnett region.”

The Roads Implementation Program outlines planned roadworks over a five-year timeframe, with firm funding commitments for projects in the first two years of the program, and indicative plans and allocations for the following three years.

“This unique program gives our stakeholders, clients and suppliers firm commitments they can factor into their own planning,” Mr Pitt said.

Mr Pitt said the 2008-09 to 2012-13 Roads Implementation Program included projects outlined in this week’s 2008-09 State Budget, as well as road projects commencing in 2009-10 and beyond.

Project allocations in the Wide Bay/Burnett Region for 2009-10 include:

• $3.5 million to continue a minor realignment and widening the pavement on a section of the Bundaberg-Lowmead Road
• $2.9 million to continue replacement of the bridge and approaches at Degilbo Creek on the Maryborough-Biggenden Road near Biggenden
• $2.1 million to continue the replacement of the bridge and approaches on Harkness Boundary Creek No 1 on the Burnett Highway near Eidsvold
• $1.85 million to continue upgrading the Kennedy Bridge on the Bundaberg-Bargara Road.

Local roads will also benefit, with allocations provided to local governments under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) in 2009-10.

The TIDS program allows local government to access state government funding to help fund projects on local roads.

TIDS allocations for 2009-10 include:

• $280,000 to construct a section of Monduran Road to two-lane standard
• $224,000 to widen and overlay a section of Dundowran Road
• $215,000 to construct a bikeway and footpath on the Bruce Highway overpass near Gayndah Road
• $173,000 to construct a section of Foley’s Road at Cordalba to two-lane standard.

The five-year program also confirms Wide Bay/Burnett Region projects announced as part of a record roads budget for 2008-09, including:

• construction of the $92 million Bundaberg Ring Road
• a $18 million project to upgrade major intersections and road improvements on the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road between the Torbanlea turnoff and Dundowran Road
• a $11.5 million project to widen the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road from north of Dundowran to the Pialba-Burrum Heads Road, 7km south of Pialba
• a $6.6 million project to replace the bridge and approaches at Degilbo Creek on the Maryborough-Biggenden Road near Biggenden
• a $4.6 million project to replace the bridge and approaches on Harkness Boundary Creek No 1 on the Burnett Highway near Eidsvold
• a $2 million project to upgrade the Kennedy Bridge on the Bundaberg-Bargara Road.
