Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Five-year plan for Gold Coast and Logan roads

Road safety and capacity improvements are the focus for road funding on the south coast and Logan areas, as part of a record $16.2 billion five-year roads program released by the Bligh Government today.

The Roads Implementation Program 2008-09 to 2012-13 outlines a $16.2 billion infrastructure investment for Queensland's roads over the next five years, including $2.13 billion for Gold Coast and Logan road projects.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the program—a 22 per cent increase on last year's program—highlighted record funding for Queensland roads.

“The latest Roads Implementation Program looks over the horizon as part of our longer-term planning for the future of our state’s road network,” Mr Pitt said.

“This government is building tomorrow’s Queensland today and we have allocated a record funding program to achieve this objective,” he said.

“This record funding includes more than $2 billion in projects that will improve the safety, capacity and reliability of roads in growing Ipswich city.”

The Roads Implementation Program outlines planned roadworks over a five-year timeframe, with firm funding commitments for projects in the first two years of the program, and indicative plans and allocations for the following three years.

“This unique program gives our stakeholders, clients and suppliers firm commitments they can factor into their own planning,” Mr Pitt said.

Mr Pitt said the 2008-09 to 2012-13 Roads Implementation Program included projects outlined in this week’s 2008-09 State Budget, as well as road projects commencing in 2009-10 and beyond.

Gold Coast and Logan projects for 2009-10 include:

• $17.4 million under a $20 million project to upgrade the Waterford-Tamborine Road between Albert River and Yore Road, including a new two-lane bridge over the Albert River
• $5 million under a $6.3 million project to upgrade Beenleigh Connection Road between Kokoda Street and Chris Green Park in Beenleigh
• $1 million as part of a $14 million project for a four-lane deviation of Tamborine-Oxenford Road at Oxenford.

Local roads will also benefit, with allocations provided to Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Logan councils under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) in 2009-10.

The TIDS program allows local government to access state government funding to help fund projects on local roads.

TIDS allocations for Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Logan councils in 2009-10 include:

• $417,000 for Logan City Council to widen a section of Wembley Road between Logan Motorway and Browns Plains Road to a four-lane standard
• $305,000 for Scenic Rim Regional Council for pavement reconstruction to two-lane sealed standard on Teviot Road between Tralee Court and Flagstone Creek
• $250,240 for Scenic Rim Regional Council to widen and strengthen 1.5km of Roadvale Road to two-lane sealed standard
• a $216,333 contribution for Gold Coast City Council for the Reserve Road Deviation from Tamborine-Oxenford Road to Hart Street, including construction of a new 1.3km road deviation to four-lane standard from Hart Street, connecting to a new intersection with Tamborine-Oxenford Road
• $216,000 for Logan City Council to realign a section of Park Ridge Road between Mt Lindesay Highway and Ceratonia Street to a two-lane sealed standard.

The five-year program also confirms Gold Coast and Logan projects announced as part of a record roads budget for 2008-09, including:

• a $128 million project for ongoing works to widen the Gold Coast Highway to four lanes between Government Road and Robert Street
• a $45 million project to upgrade the Nerang South interchange at the junction of the Pacific Motorway and Nielsens Road, as part of a joint Queensland and Australian Government project
• a $68 million project to continue widening sections of the Smith Street Connection Road to six lanes between the Pacific Motorway and High Street
• a $22 million project to complete bus priority works between Broadbeach and Miami, on the Gold Coast Highway
• a $14 million project to continue realignment of the Tamborine-Oxenford Road to two lanes between Riversdale Road and the Pacific Motorway.
