Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Five-year plan for Gympie and South Burnett roads
Safety and rehabilitation projects are the focus of road funding in Gympie and the South Burnett Region, as part of a record $16.2 billion five-year roads program released by the Bligh Government today.
The Roads Implementation Program 2008-09 to 2012-13 outlines a $16.2 billion infrastructure investment for Queensland's roads over the next five years, including $832.9 million for Gympie/South Burnett road projects.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the program—a 22 per cent increase on last year's program—highlighted record funding for Queensland roads.
“The latest Roads Implementation Program looks over the horizon as part of our longer-term planning for the future of our state’s road network,” Mr Pitt said.
“This government is building tomorrow’s Queensland today and we have allocated a record funding program to achieve this objective,” he said.
“This record funding includes more than $830 million in projects that will improve the safety, capacity and reliability of roads in the Gympie and South Burnett areas.”
The Roads Implementation Program outlines planned roadworks over a five-year timeframe, with firm funding commitments for projects in the first two years of the program, and indicative plans and allocations for the following three years.
“This unique program gives our stakeholders, clients and suppliers firm commitments they can factor into their own planning,” Mr Pitt said.
Mr Pitt said the 2008-09 to 2012-13 Roads Implementation Program included projects outlined in this week’s 2008-09 State Budget, as well as road projects commencing in 2009-10 and beyond.
Gympie and South Burnett project allocations for 2009-10 include:
• $1.4 million to rehabilitate the pavement on the Wide Bay Highway between Kinbombi Creek and Goomeri
• $470,000 to repair and strengthen a section of the Mundubbera-Durong Road
• $310,000 to rehabilitate sections of the D’Aguilar Highway from Kilcoy to Yarraman
• $300,000 towards replacing the bridge and approaches at Wide Bay Creek on the Bauple-Woolooga Road
• $211,000 to rehabilitate and widen sections of the Burnett Highway from Goomeri to Gayndah.
Local roads will also benefit, with $1.3 million in allocations provided to regional councils under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) in 2009-10.
The TIDS program allows local government to access state government funding to help fund projects on local roads.
TIDS allocations for Gympie and South Burnett in 2009-10 include:
• $515,000 to assist with upgrading roads in the region, including Moy Pocket Road, Noosa Road, Graham Street, Monkland Street, Boreen Point-Tin Can Bay Road, Fraser Road (Gympie), Sandy Creek Road, Anderleigh Road, Abel Road, Fraser Road (Kilkivan), Sexton Road and Gatehouse Road
• $290,000 to improve safety and facilities including footpaths, passenger set-down area and bus shelters at various schools in Gympie
• $150,000 to help construct bikeways on Brisbane Road, Old Maryborough Road, Exhibition Road and Old Maryborough Road near Victory College
• $60,000 to widen, repair and strengthen Alford Street East between Somerset Street and Bakers Creek Road, Kingaroy
• $50,000 for parking facilities at the Taabinga State School.
The five-year program also confirms Gympie and South Burnett projects announced as part of a record roads budget for 2008-09, including:
• a $70.8 million federally funded upgrade of the highway through Gympie
• $3.28 million towards the construction of a new Vic Olsen Bridge on Tuchekoi Road
