The Honourable Anna Bligh
MACKAY TO CELEBRATE QUEENSLAND WEEK WITH STREET PARTY
Mackay is celebrating Queensland Week with a free concert in the city centre, featuring roving entertainers, circus workshops, rides for kids and a sausage sizzle on Sunday June 8.
Premier Anna Bligh said the Mackay event is one of many that are being held throughout the State as part of the annual Queensland Week celebrations which run from June 1 to June 8.
"Events such as the one in Mackay allow Queenslanders of all ages to embrace and celebrate all the joys of living in the best place in Australia, the Smart State," Ms Bligh said.
"Queensland Week is our way of marking the historic occasion of Queensland's separation from New South Wales. In addition, Queensland communities are holding their own events to celebrate what is special about their own particular region".
The festivities begin in the City Centre Markets in Victoria Street at 8.30am and include stilt walkers, amusements and performances by Richard Smith and his accompanying group of dancers and the African drumming group Zinzabar.
Andrew Morris will headline the event, supported by local acoustic duo Swoon. Morris, a talented singer-songwriter has been an active figure in the Queensland music scene for almost a decade and has just finished recording his latest album Union Bars. Swoon, widely known for their rock, folk and blues material, are fresh from supporting Powderfinger and Silverchair on their national tour.
The Queensland Week celebrations culminate with the RACQ Big BBQ on June 8 which is set to attract over 25,000 people to Brisbane's Roma Street Parkland. Entertainment features Dorothy the Dinosaur, the Boogie Woogies Superhero band, various workshops and a free BBQ while stocks last.
