The Honourable John Mickel
Port of Brisbane Corporation facilities to expand
The Port of Brisbane Corporation has identified the continuing expansion of facilities as a priority after receiving approval for an allocation of $219 million for capital works in the 2008-09 State Budget.
Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the allocation was indicative of the ongoing support for the port's operations at the mouth of the Brisbane River.
"It will also assist the continuing redevelopment of port land at the Hamilton Northshore precinct," Mr Mickel said.
Mr Mickel said $29.4 million has been allocated to relocate remaining trades from Hamilton to Fisherman Islands with a further $16.5 million to assist in the continuation of the development at the Northshore Hamilton site.
"In the next 10 to15 years a significant amount of wet, dry and break bulk cargo currently handled at the Hamilton site will be relocated to Fisherman Islands.
"The end result will be a residential development with 10 hectare of parklands developed at the site by the Urban Land Development Authority," Mr Mickel said.
The Hamilton Northshore site was declared an Urban Land Development Area on March 31, 2008 and the Corporation and ULDA will work closely to develop the site.
Construction of the parkland, café and information centre and extension of Macarthur Avenue is under way.
The Port of Brisbane Corporation has allocated $23.5 million to construct berth and wharf 11 and 12 at Fisherman Islands. These are expected to be operational by 2012 and 2014 respectively.
Another $3 million has been allocated to upgrade the barge wharf for the dredger Brisbane. The Brisbane is owned by the Corporation and provides dredging services to all other ports in Queensland.
Six million has been allocated by the Port of Brisbane Corporation to build a bridge across the Burnett River at the Port of Bundaberg to improve access to the port.
