Recruitment for next year’s intake of Year 10 students to the Queensland Academies is underway with 300 students already undertaking the tough entrance exam.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the selective-entry state high schools for students in Years 10 to 12 were an excellent option for bright students who had identified a probable career path.

“The Queensland Academies are our most prestigious schools for academically high-achieving students with an interest in the creative industries, health sciences or science, mathematics and technology,” Mr Welford said.

“In many ways, the academies are similar to other high schools in that they have a uniform, formals, camps, sport and excursions.

“However, they also offer students a rigorous curriculum, university-standard facilities, an opportunity to work with like-minded peers and extension opportunities with the Academies’ university partners.

“Through the partnerships with Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland, students get a chance to experience a taste of university life before they even finish school.”

There has been strong interest in attending the academies, with students recently undertaking the entrance test in Sarina, Bundaberg, Innisfail and Hobart, as well as Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Mr Welford said student achievements were a measure of the success the Academies were enjoying in 2008.

“Both individually and as groups, students have made the Australian Physics Olympiad team, qualified for industry experience at NIDA and will perform at a major music festival in New Zealand,” he said.

“In partnership with the University of Queensland, students from the Academies are working on the Engineers Without Borders program, assisting with such schemes as rural electrification in Cambodia.

“They are also involved in collaborative artist-in-residence programs in which they mentor primary school students.”

Students entering Year 10 in 2009 have until July 26 to register for the final entry test. For more information phone the Queensland Academies on 3350 7880 or visit www.qldacademies.eq.edu.au
