The Honourable Warren Pitt

State Budget delivers for Central Queensland roads

The Bligh Government is building infrastructure for regional Queensland, with $84.6 million allocated in the State Budget for road projects in Central Queensland in 2008-09.

The funding is part of a record $3.235 billion commitment towards roads in the 2008-09 State Budget that will drive progress on the Queensland Government’s infrastructure plans.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the 2008-09 Budget would strengthen regional communities and deliver critical road improvements.

“$3.1 million in funding will see completion of a $5.3 million project already underway on the Burnett Highway between Argoon and Jambin,” Mr Pitt said.

“An allocation of $1.45 million has been provided for fatigue management facilities on the Capricorn Highway between Rockhampton and Downfall Creek, as part of a $2 million project to improve safety for motorists.

“The Gladstone-Mt Larcom Road will also receive $650,000 in 2008-09 for various road improvements worth $1.9 million.”

Mr Pitt said the new Rockhampton and Gladstone Regional councils and Banana Shire Council would also benefit, with a share of the $6.4 million in Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) funding allocated to these councils.

The TIDS program allows local government to access State Government funding for projects on local roads.

“Rockhampton Regional Council will receive $1.75 million to construct a freight transfer station access road at Yeppoon and provide intersection improvements on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road,” Mr Pitt said.

“$175,000 in federal funding will also help Gladstone Regional Council widen the James Street rail overpass.

“A further $120,000 contribution will provide for asphalt resurfacing of Glenlyon Road.”
