State Budget delivers for Central Highlands roads

More than $35 million would be spent delivering road projects on the Central Highlands in 2008-09 as part of a record allocation in the State Budget for roads, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

The funding is part of a record $3.235 billion commitment towards roads in the 2008-09 Budget that will drive progress on the Queensland Government’s infrastructure plans.

Mr Pitt said $35.6 million funding for Central Highlands roads would strengthen the region’s communities and deliver improvements for key local roads.

“This year, the Dawson Highway will receive a $6.3 million injection of funding as part of a $6.7 million project to improve the road between Meteor Creek north and Three Chain Road,” Mr Pitt said.

“A further $2.9 million is allocated to pave and seal sections of the Blackwater-Rolleston Road, 30km to 90km south of Blackwater, as part of a $7.3 million project.”

Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was also addressing impacts of the population boom in regional towns.

“Hospital Road in Emerald will receive a maintenance overhaul with $5 million allocated as part of a $5.3 million project,” he said.

Mr Pitt said the new Central Highlands Regional Council would also benefit greatly from this year's Budget with $1.2 million allocated under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).

The TIDS program allows local government to access State Government funding for projects on local roads.

“The Clermont-Rubyvale Road will be paved and sealed 57km south of Clermont with a State Government contribution of $316,972,” Mr Pitt said.

“A further $210,472 is provided to the Central Highlands Regional Council to assist with the realignment of the Lurline/Riley's Crossing Road, 8km north of Comet.”
