Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson
BUDGET DELIVERS FUNDS FOR CAIRNS HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT
Health Minister Stephen Robertson today welcomed funding in today’s State Budget for the Bligh Government’s major redevelopment of Cairns Hospital.
Mr Robertson said the Bligh Government had delivered on an earlier commitment to immediately invest in significant improvements at Cairns Hospital worth an anticipated $450 million.
“We’ll spend $24.2 million next financial year to get the project off the ground,” Mr Robertson said.
“It’s a significant kickstart for the massive redevelopment that will, in effect, deliver a brand new hospital for the people of Cairns.
“The total project will cost an estimated $450 million and once completed it will provide enhanced health services for the community, including additional cardiac care facilities and a full day surgery unit.
“Additionally, the main section of the hospital (B Block) will be completely refurbished to provide a new home for specialist clinics and pathology services.
“A comprehensive cancer care unit will also be built along with a new radiation oncology service and that crucial health care will be planned in consultation with local stakeholders.
“In addition, aged care and rehabilitation facilities will be upgraded.
“It’s estimated that demand for health services at Cairns Hospital will double by 2021 and that’s why it’s vital that we plan for and manage that growth.
“The Bligh Government’s plan for Cairns Hospital will see services dramatically expanded within 5 years.
“The new funding will also deliver an integrated mental health unit in A Block that will provide additional beds for patients needing longer term care.
In addition, the planned $11 million redevelopment of the Cairns Hospital Emergency Department at the base of C Block will continue to be delivered.”
