Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Stay safe, stay out of floodwaters
Emergency Service Minister Neil Roberts is reminding Queenslanders to be careful around floodwaters.
Mr Roberts said heavy rain in south-east Queensland has led to flash and dangerous flooding in many areas.
"Flooding earlier this year claimed three lives. We do not want a repeat of those tragedies in the latest inundations," Mr Roberts said.
"People should never drive or ride in floodwaters, never swim or wade in floodwaters and follow official instructions."
Mr Roberts said residents who require assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES) on the SES Hotline 132 500.
“SES crews have been busy since Friday. More than 130 SES volunteers have provided assistance today alone,” Mr Roberts said.
“The SES has responded to almost 600 calls for assistance in the 24 hours to 3pm today. More than half of those calls have been from the Sunshine Coast.”
Mr Roberts said the Bureau of Meteorology’s severe weather warning remained current across the region and a flood warning was issued for the Maroochy River and Sunshine Coast region streams.
Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) is encouraging residents to follow a few simple steps that can help prepare your family and property:
·repair any loose roof tiles, eaves and roof screws, clear your gutters and downpipes and trim overhanging tree branches;
·secure animals and loose items around your yard;
·park vehicles under shelter or secure with tarpaulins or blankets;
·prepare an emergency kit for your family and keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy; and
·stay tuned to your local radio station for storm warnings and advice.
