Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Sunshine Coast jobseekers assisted into work

Sunshine Coast Food Incorporated has taken on the task to train 50 participants in Food Processing to enable them to pursue a career in the industry and secure long-term employment.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the project has received $38,870 funding by the Queensland Government under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

“Sunshine Coast Food Inc will deliver entry-level training to unemployed participants and more advanced training to participants already working in the industry who will benefit from updated and improved skills,” Mr Mickel said.

“This project will address skills shortages occurring in the industry as a result of technological changes and new legislative requirements.

“Modules to be covered during the 17-week project include Senior First Aid certificate, stock control procedures, occupational health and safety, food safety procedures, forklift training and preparing for and participating in a quality audit.”

Sunshine Coast Food Inc President Michael Hughes said Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE will fund and deliver a number of the modules participants will complete, with some practical training taking place within industry sites.

“The training components have been designed so the skills developed will transcend sub-sectors of the industry,” Mr Hughes said.

“Jobseekers within the project will be privy to factory tours and direct networking with potential employers to assist participants into employment.

“The Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry have contributed $1,600 in-kind support to help with advertising, administration duties and the training venue.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 69 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
