Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Firefighters cycle for burn victims
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts has welcomed a group of firefighters on the completion of a 19-day, 1800-kilometre ride along the Queensland coast to raise funds for children with burn injuries in Brisbane today.
Mr Roberts said the riders taking part in the 2008 Bike for Burns or the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Research Group left Cairns on 12 May. Riders raised $21,000 last year and they expect to raise more than $30,000 this year.
“Our firefighters are dedicated to protecting our community and property from fire, and they do an excellent job,” Mr Roberts said.
“Firefighters and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service staff have shown their commitment to helping children who suffer burn injuries.”
The Royal Children’s Hospital treats more than 500 children with burns injuries each year.
Mr Roberts presented the riders with a $500 donation on behalf of the Queensland Government’s Department of Emergency Services.
“The funds raised will make an incredible difference to the lives of young Queenslanders. Young burn patients often need hours of painful rehabilitation and surgery to help the burnt skin stretch as their bodies grow.”
Support for the event is still welcome and people are encouraged to make a contribution by visiting the Royal Children’s Hospital website www.workingwonders.com.au.
