Nine Rural Fire Service volunteers from the Sunshine Coast region have been officially recognised for more than 180 years of combined service to their local fire brigades.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts presented the members of brigades at Maroochy River, Federal, Doonan and Black Mountain today.

“The Rural Fire Service boasts about 35,000 volunteers in more than 1500 brigades across Queensland. Like any volunteer emergency services organisation, the Rural Fire Service depends upon selfless and dedicated members of the community,” Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts said Rural Fire Service brigades in the Sunshine Coast region boasted many long-serving and experienced volunteers.

“I am pleased to recognise nine of those members today, and acknowledge the sacrifices they and their family have made over many years,” Mr Roberts said.

Among the award recipients were couple Ken and Rozanne Thomas, who together have provided more than 55 years’ service to the Federal Rural Fire Service brigade. Mr Thomas is a 2nd officer with the Federal brigade, while Mrs Thomas is serving as brigade treasurer. Both were awarded national medals.
