Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Sunshine Coast region rural fire station opened

The new home for the Maroochy River Rural Fire Brigade was officially opened today.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the brigade, which was established in 1969, boasted 22 volunteers, one medium appliance and one light appliance.

“The building of the new station has been a major project in recent years, and an addition including a washroom, shower and disabled toilet were completed earlier this year,” Mr Roberts said.

“The Maroochy River brigade is one of more than 1500 brigades across the State working as the Rural Fire Service to manage and fight rural fires.”

“The brigade conducts numerous hazard reduction burns and it supports neighbouring brigades.”

“Three long-serving members of the brigade – Howard Prentis (27 years), Peter Garrett (19 years) and Anthony Welsh (17 years) – have also been recognised at today’s ceremony.”

Meanwhile, a new light attack appliance vehicle for the Conondale brigade was formally handed over today. The vehicle cost $68,000 with 80% of the costs subsidised.

“The Conondale brigade was formed in 1990 and it has approximately 30 members.”
