Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford has joined Queensland state school students in congratulating 39 teachers selected from around the state as 2008 My Favourite Teacher winners.
Mr Welford said the teachers had been recognised for their exemplary work as part of State Education Week celebrations.
“Teachers were nominated by their students and more than 4800 My Favourite Teacher nominations flooded in from around the state,” Mr Welford said.
“I join with the students in giving all our teachers the recognition and praise they truly deserve.
“With 2008 being the Year of Physical Activity in Queensland state schools teachers were nominated for encouraging students to be more active.
“The Year of Physical Activity highlights our Government’s commitment to acting on child obesity and encouraging all young Queenslanders to enjoy lifelong good health.
“In conjunction with the Year of Physical Activity we have rolled-out the Smart Moves program which requires state primary school students to participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity every school day.
“Secondary school students are being active for at least two hours a week.”
Mr Welford said through these initiatives teachers were helping students to establish healthy habits that would stay with them for a lifetime.
“Queensland teachers are the backbone of schools, tirelessly working to educate our students,” he said.
“I congratulate them for their commitment to this important initiative—they all deserve applause for their hard work.
My Favourite Teacher is run in conjunction with State Education Week and gives students and the community an opportunity to publicly thank their teachers.
State Education Week was celebrated in Queensland between Monday 26 May and Friday 30 May. A full list of the 2008 My Favourite Teacher winners can be found on the following page.
