The Honourable Rod Welford
Arts Minister names finalists in leading library awards
An Indigenous Knowledge Centre in Cherbourg and a Townsville library are among the finalists for the prestigious Library Board of Queensland and John Oxley Library awards.
Arts Minister Rod Welford, in announcing the five finalists for the two awards, said the awards acknowledged individuals and organisations that had contributed to the preservation and appreciation of Queensland’s history.
“They also recognise excellence in working for and supporting libraries across Queensland, from major cities to remote areas,” Mr Welford said.
“The State Library of Queensland plays a leading role in recognising the important work achieved by libraries and the value in appreciating Queensland history.
“As the custodian of Queensland’s documentary heritage and a partner with the state’s public libraries, it is important for the State Library to foster the search for excellence in these areas.”
Mr Welford said the $5,000 John Oxley Library Award and the $5,000 Library Board of Queensland Award would be presented at the State Library on 5 June at a gala dinner.
“The winner of the 2008 John Oxley Library Fellowship, worth $20,000, will also be named at this event,” he said.
The John Oxley Library Award recognises contributions to social, political, economic and cultural life in any part of Queensland.
Finalists for the 2008 award are – Remember When … Memories of Ipswich Project Team, for engaging the local community, documenting their stories and presenting them online; Nambour Chronicle Digitisation Team for developing an online version of the Nambour Chronicle (1903–1955); and Thuringowa Branch, Citilibraries Townsville, for its History and Heritage program.
The Library Board of Queensland Award recognises the achievement or support of work done by libraries such as the development of collections and services, developing partnerships and the education and training of library workers.
Finalists for the 2008 award are: Joan Keating, for her contribution to the development of resources for the study of Australian literature through her involvement with the University of Queensland’s Fryer Library and AustLit: The Australian Literature Resource; and the Winifred Fisher Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC), for services to the Cherbourg community.
