Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Manufacturing careers for young people under spotlight in Wide Bay
A Queensland Government display booth at the Wide Bay Vocational Pathways Career Expo on June 11 will encourage young people to enter innovative and dynamic industries like boatbuilding, aerospace, food processing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle is encouraging young people to visit the expo at the Fraser Coast Showgrounds, 349 Bruce Highway, north of Maryborough, from 10am – 7pm.
Ms Boyle described Queensland’s manufacturing industry as world-class and said it needed more skilled workers.
“This exciting display will show young people that manufacturing offers a career, not just a job,” she said.
“They will be able to see the range of exciting opportunities in industries like aerospace, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, boatbuilding, electronics, fibre composites and food processing and supply.
“It will also help students to understand that the manufacturing industry will provide them with lifelong skills in a variety of different occupations which are transferable to other industries.”
Ms Boyle said the display would feature industry experts as well as practical information on how to start an apprenticeship.
“It is all part of the Government’s Create it Make it Live it campaign which is specifically designed to attract young people into careers and employment in Queensland’s manufacturing sector,” she said.
“The stand will also give young people the chance to access the campaign’s revamped website which showcases career information, training options, employer profiles and profiles about young people working or training in the industry.”
Ms Boyle said the Create it Make it Live it campaign had run for the past two years and was targeted at high school students from Years 10 to12 as well as their parents and teachers.
“This year the campaign has two new slogans for 2008 – Manufacturing: Great Careers, Great Prospects and Manufacturing: Careers that Really Pay, which the Government will be promoting widely at events like the Business Liaison Association Careers Expo,“ she said.
