Rocky jobseekers skill up and graduate

Rockhampton is set to get its second group of graduates from the Skill Up project funded under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

The project is part of a $278,740 grant provided to Oasis Community Services Inc. for 2007-08.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten said the graduates underwent job preparation activities and work placements with not-for-profit organisations.

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative projects are about providing opportunities to people who have difficulty finding work for various reasons including physical and mental disabilities, personal issues and out dated skills,” Mr Mickel said.

“Participants are able to develop both practical and personal skills to approach employers with and often overcome their own disadvantages.”

Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten said 12 graduates were engaged in job preparation activities to help them with essential skills such as punctuality, presentation, attitude and professionalism.

“Two other participants were given the chance to undergo work placements with Oasis Community Services and Rockhampton PCYC,” Mr Schwarten said.

“While unemployment is at a low 3.6 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“Projects like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce and help build the state’s skilled workforce.”

Oasis Community Services CEO John Rewald said on-the-job training has placed participants in an advantageous position to pursue business administration and sales roles.

“Participants enjoyed working with community organisations developing proficiency in computer applications, answering telephones, filing, customer service and archiving.”

This graduation is to be held on June 2, 2008 at 152 George St, Rockhampton.

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 69 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
