Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
The Queensland Government will offer the state's public servants a 3.25 per cent wage increase over the next three years.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Queensland’s public servants performed vital and important work right across the State - sometimes in extremely difficult circumstances.
"The Queensland Government believes public sector workers deserve a fair pay rise,'' he said.
Mr Mickel said Queensland public sector wages had increased in real terms by 10-20 per cent in the past 10 years, depending on the classification, which was a substantial catch up with public sector wage rates in other states.
"The Government believes public service remuneration is fair and reasonable. Queensland public sector wage rates have grown faster than Queensland private sector wage rates in the past 10 years," he said.
Mr Mickel said the 3.25 per cent pay offer, in the next three year period, would match estimated average inflation in that period. Any increases above that figure would be based on improving services delivered through greater efficiency.
"We are now in an environment where governments and the community must work together to moderate inflation through wages and spending, otherwise the Reserve Bank will do it for us by further increasing interest rates," Mr Mickel said.
"Our employees enjoy job security, generous superannuation benefits superior to most employers including other governments and a range of workplace entitlements and flexibilities including 14 weeks' maternity leave," he said.
Mr Mickel said the Government was also facing significant pressure on its services to the community, with greater focus placed on service delivery which would benefit workers, the government and the public.
