Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Coastal residents urged to prepare for weather
The Queensland Government is urging residents to prepare their properties for the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds over the coming days.
Strong winds, dangerous surf and heavy rain, which may lead to localised flooding, are predicted to affect the area from Gladstone to the Gold Coast from today.
Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) is encouraging residents to follow a few simple steps that can help prepare your family and property:
- Repair any loose roof tiles, eaves and roof screws, clear your gutters and downpipes and trim overhanging tree branches;
- Secure animals and loose items around your yard;
- Park vehicles under shelter or secure with tarpaulins or blankets;
- Prepare an emergency kit for your family and keep a list of emergency contact numbers handy; and
- Stay tuned to your local radio station for storm warnings and advice.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said residents who require assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES) on the SES Hotline 132 500.
“The SES Hotline is a single, simple number people can use to get into contact with their local SES,” Mr Roberts said.
“Since the Hotline was launched in July last year, more than 20,000 calls have been received.”
