Minister opens Careers and Employment Expo

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford officially opened the National Careers and Employment Expo at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre today.

Mr Welford said the Expo, which runs from 23-24 May, would provide education, employment and training options to Queensland school leavers, graduates, skilled workers and mature workers.

“This free two-day Expo enables employers, education and training providers to communicate directly with potential candidates,” Mr Welford said.

“The event operates in regional and metropolitan centres around Australia, between April and August, attracting some 160,000 people.

“The Brisbane Expo will include exhibits from dozens of employers, training providers, universities and job search agencies including – Australia Post, BHP, Brisbane City Council, Defence Force Australia, Fitness First, Griffith University, Mission Australia, Suncorp, Queensland Police and Toyota.

“I encourage anyone who’s looking for work, a career change or training and employment opportunities to get along to the Expo over the next two days.”

As part of the event Mr Welford attended the Skills Tech Australia exhibit and launched a new interactive online game for TAFE Queensland, called Bring Home the Bacon.

“This educational game has been designed by TAFE Queensland for high school students to help them map out their future career and training options,” he said.

“The game incorporates the vast opportunities available through TAFE, using the Internet because it is a popular medium with young people.

“TAFE Queensland is the largest provider of practical, relevant and quality education and training in Queensland.”

Courses are available through an extensive network of institutes using a variety of modes of delivery. These include the traditional classroom, distance, online, workplace or a combination of all modes. With over 800 programs to choose from at more than 80 locations across the state, TAFE Queensland provides more flexibility, more options and more possibilities.

Bring Home the Bacon is available on the TAFE Queensland’s home page www.tafe.qld.gov.au, or Anything’s Possible website www.anythingspossible.com.au. It will also be available in school kits and at other careers expos. For further information about TAFE Queensland call 1300 308 233 or visit the website.
