Roma-Taroom Road upgrade remains on track

The $30 million project to upgrade sections of the Roma–Taroom Road remained on track for completion by mid 2010, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

Mr Pitt said the project was still on track and had not been delayed by the local government reforms that had occurred in March.

“The previous local government, Taroom Shire, did a great job of constructing and sealing about 19km of this important road on time and to budget during the past two years," Mr Pitt said.

“The time has now come to hand the baton over to the new Roma Regional Council and Banana Shire Council, and I am confident the project will remain on track with a seamless continuation from the previous council.

“The project represents an important investment in the future of the region and the livelihoods of those who use the road on a daily basis."

Banana Shire Mayor John Hooper reaffirmed the council’s commitment to the resealing project and acknowledged the hard work of the former Taroom Shire Council staff.

“This road is a very important link from the south-west to the Central Highlands and North Burnett regions, and will be an important driver of economic and social investment for the region in years to come," Cr Hooper said.

“The council is fully committed to completing the work and sealing the estimated 12km of road left on the project.

“Most importantly, the residents will also get an all-weather road in most sections, which will make it easier to drive between Roma and Taroom and for children at Peek-a-doo State School to get to school."

Mr Pitt thanked residents and the community for supporting the project through the sharing of information and access to resources such as gravel pits and water sources.
