The North Burnett Regional Council will receive $128,000 in Queensland Government funding for two key water supply projects.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt announced details of the funding under round nine of the Smaller Communities Assistance Program (SCAP) today.

“In many smaller communities, the cost of providing essential water and sewerage infrastructure is often a financial burden that is out of reach for councils,” Mr Pitt said.

“That is why the Queensland Government works with rural and regional communities, through funding programs such as SCAP, to help improve the capacity and efficiency of local water and sewerage resources throughout the state.”

Mr Pitt said the council would receive $80,000 to construct a new bore and expand the reticulated water supply at Mt Perry to service a further 81 urban lots, and a further $48,000 to investigate options for accessing a bore water supply for Eidsvold from the Great Artesian Basin.

“The upgrade of water supplies in smaller communities is one of the major benefits of this program, which leads to improvements for both the health of locals as well as the surrounding environment,” he said.

“SCAP funding is targeted at towns with populations of fewer than 5000 and provides councils with funding to build important water and sewerage infrastructure by helping to make large-scale water projects and services more affordable.

“In recent years, the SCAP program has assisted small communities around the state with projects ranging from the construction of desalination plants to planning studies identifying how sewage can be treated and reused for non-drinking purposes.”

Mr Pitt said more than $225 million had now been distributed through the SCAP program, including more than $55 million this year. Under SCAP, councils can access subsidies of up to 80 per cent of the costs of water and sewerage projects.
