Some of our most notorious fairytale characters will go trial tomorrow in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said the mock court trials were part of the Law Week 2008 open day.

“The moot court trials will be the highlight of the Law Week open day, with four taking place in the Brisbane Magistrates Court throughout the day,” Mr Shine said.

“We have the allegedly evil witch from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves appearing on three charges of attempted murder and one charge of conspiracy to murder.

“Chief Magistrate Judge Marshall Irwin will preside over this hearing at 10.30am.”

Mr Shine said it was also possible that some of the four defendants may be committed to the higher courts for trial and sentencing.

“Due to the serious nature of some of the charges, there will be sentencing proceedings held later on in the day in the Supreme and District Courts,” Mr Shine said.

“New District Court Judge Leanne Clare SC will preside over the hearing of Robin Hood, appearing in court on stealing charges.

“I am reliably informed that Mr Hood’s defence team will argue he was merely undertaking charity work by relieving the rich of their money to give to the poor."

Mr Shine said the moot court trials give members of the public an opportunity not seen before in Queensland, where they can witness a court case from start to finish, albeit it in a mock setting.

“Due to the popularity of the moot Magistrates Courts during last year’s Law Week, this year we have increased the number of moots and added Supreme and District Court hearings.

“This is a great opportunity for Queenslanders to come along and see how our justice system works.”

The open day signals the start of Law Week 2008 (10-16 May), a week of events dedicated to helping Queenslanders learn more about the law and how it works in Queensland.
