The Honourable Desley Boyle

Local wine lovers may not even be aware of the delights in their own backyard according to Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle.

Ms Boyle has released the new Wine and Food Map of Queensland which features 11 local wineries in the North Burnett region.

“The North Burnett region is one of 10 distinct wine regions across Queensland, producing beautiful wines,” she said.

“From Chardonnay and Merlot to Shiraz and Verdelho locals can sample unique home grown wines for themselves.

“These wineries are the perfect destination for a weekend drive and the perfect way to get a taste for Queensland wine.”

Ms Boyle said the map was the only one of its kind in Australia with detailed information about cellar doors, wineries, wine producers and boutique food producers offering similar cellar door experiences.

“Wine tourism is a growing area for Queensland and our wines are worth enjoying,” she said.

North Burnett cellar doors featuring in the Food and Wine Map of Queensland 2008 include:

• Brischetto Wines, Hughes Road, Bargara
• Brierley Wines, Rainbows Road, Childers
• Gecko Valley Wines, Glenlyon Road, Gladstone
• Hill of Promise, Mango Hill Drive, Childers
• Stanton Estate, North Isis Road, Childers
• Sweet Water Hill Wines, Robert Road, Anderleigh
• Waratah Vineyard, Gladstone Road, Mungungo
• Wonbah Estate Winery, Wonbah Road, Gin Gin.

Visitors can also find their way to Mammino’s Gourmet Icecream in Childers where they can sample gourmet ice creams, sorbets and a range of macadamia nut products.

More information about local wineries can be obtained by contacting your local tourist information centre at Bundaberg on 4153 8888 or Gladstone on 4972 9000.
