Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
Rockhampton JP's Recognised for their Outstanding Service
Four central Queensland residents have been recognised for their 25 years community services as Justices of the Peace at a ceremony in Rockhampton today.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine was joined by Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten to present the “silver service” awards to John Rogers, Jeffrey Fittler, John Baxter and Gary Phillips.
Mr Shine said JP’s play a significant role in improving access to legal services for members of the public.
“Every day JP’s handle between 1500 and 2000 matters in Queensland including witnessing a variety of documents from simple statutory declarations to more complex affidavits,” he said.
“I congratulate these recipients on their continued dedication and commitment to serve the local community as Justices of the Peace on a voluntary basis.”
Mr Schwarten, who is also acting as the Member for Fitzroy while Jim Pearce is on leave, said Mr Rogers, Mr Phillips, Mr Baxter and Mr Fittler are perfect examples of the excellent work conducted by JP’s.
“They have given enormous support to our community over the last 25 years by providing easy access to legal services for local people,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The central Queensland community owes a debt of gratitude to these men and all Justices of the Peace who give up their valuable time to serve the community.”
Mr Shine said the Government has increased public access to JP services through its JP’s in the Community Program.
“This program allows the public to engage the free services of a JP at signing centres in local court houses, shopping centres and other popular places,” he said.
“I recently opened the 110th JP Signing Centre in Cairns and the program continues to be an enormous success.”
