Green shopping has been made easier with the launch of Australia’s first national online shopping directory devoted to recycled and recyclable products.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara, today launched the product directory which provides consumers and business with a user friendly database of recycled products available across Australia.

“The National Recycled Products Directory will provide a one-stop-shop of detailed product information for a range of recycled products – to a level of detail that’s never before been achieved,” Mr McNamara said.

“The Environmental Protection Agency is providing $20,000 towards the online directory which already lists more than 500 products,” Mr McNamara said.

“By providing transparent, detailed and consistent information on a range of recycled products, this initiative is empowering Australian consumers, industry and government to make environmentally responsible purchases.

“People will be able to do the right thing and actively reduce the carbon footprint of their shopping.

“By making informed decisions to “buy recycled” they will be ensuring responsible resource recovery – not only reducing the amount of waste going into landfill, but also decreasing energy and water usage.

“Importantly this directory may also help grow the business market for recycled and recyclable materials – a goal of the Buy Recycled Business Alliance (BRBA) which developed the project."

BRBA is made up of leading companies including Amcor Australasia, Australian Paper, Corporate Express, Fosters Group, Fuji Xerox, McDonalds and Visy Industries who are committed to creating and buying recycled products.

BRBA Chair Lena Geraghty said “buying recycled” was essential to driving demand for recycled content products, in turn creating a successful Australian recycling market, and contributing to corporate sustainability.

“All relevant information on the product suppliers will be made available so that consumers can source products directly from the relevant supplier,” she said.

Mr McNamara said the database would also allow industry and governments, and importantly signatories to the National Packaging Covenant, to make informed purchasing decisions.

“More than 630 companies are signed up to the Covenant, which aims to help industry reduce the packaging waste going into landfill, by taking responsibility over the life cycle of packaging from design to disposal,” he said.

The National Recycled Products Directory is free to use and can be accessed via the BRBA website at www.brba.com.au.
