Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland
The Honourable Craig Wallace
Natural Resources and Water Minister and Thuringowa MP Craig Wallace today announced the proposed official naming of four popular Thuringowa beaches.
Minister Wallace said a proposal had been submitted to the government to officially name Balgal Beach, Toomulla Beach, Toolakea Beach and Bushland Beach in accordance with the Place Names Act 1994.
Mr Wallace said although the beach names were well known locally, they had never been officially recorded under the Place Names Act.
By officially naming these beaches, these names will be on the official record forever. Naming will ensure they are included in official maps and in the records of all government agencies.
Local tourism will be enhanced and local history will be officially recognised.
“Thuringowa is well known for its beautiful beach areas, which are popular with both locals and tourists,” Mr Wallace said.
“While we locals know these names so well, it’s important that these beaches have a permanent place on the Queensland map.”
Minister Wallace said each of the beaches had unique characteristics and were special to the community.
“Toolakea Beach, about 33km from Thuringowa Central, is a beautiful beach, perfect for a picnic and for beach fishing.
“Balgal Beach, just over 50km north of Thuringowa Central, a popular day and overnight site, has a boat ramp, is great for beach and river fishing, picnics and barbeques, and has a café, kiosk, accommodation and camping areas.
“Toomulla Beach, about 42km from Thuringowa Central, is great for birdwatchers. It also boasts a boat ramp and is a great camping spot.
“Bushland Beach, 15 minutes north of Thuringowa Central, has a store, resort, park, barbeque facilities, superb marine life, playgrounds and a boat ramp and at low tide exposes an old wooden shipwreck.
The Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) administers the Place Names Act that controls the official naming of localities, suburbs and geographical features within local government boundaries.
In October 2007 the former Council of the City of Thuringowa submitted a proposal to NRW to officially name the four northern beaches within the City of Thuringowa (now the new City of Townsville).
Minister Wallace said that following preliminary comment from local State Members of Parliament, public consultation would take place.
