The Honourable Warren Pitt

Main Roads improves safety on popular Bundaberg tourist route

Motorists in the Bundaberg region can look forward to safer driving conditions with the start this week of upgrades worth $800,000 to sections of the Bundaberg–Miriam Vale Road.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the upgrades, part of the State Government’s Safer Roads Sooner program, involved the widening and strengthening of sections of the popular tourist route.

“This road has experienced an increase in traffic volumes of about 60 per cent during the past five years,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Safer Roads Sooner project includes widening and strengthening works from Yandaran Road to Littabella Creek, and the removal of some regrowth trees in the road reserve to improve motorists' visibility and safety.

"These improvements will give motorists travelling to tourist destinations, such as Town of 1770 and Agnes Water, a smoother and safer journey.

“The road shoulder opposite Jo’s Roadhouse will also be sealed to make it safer for motorists stopping on this busy road."

In conjunction with the widening and strengthening project, Main Roads will commence repairs from erosion on the roadside, north of the Kolan River.

Weather permitting, the widening and strengthening will be completed by the end of May.

The work will result in the temporary lowering of speed limits. Motorists are urged to observe these changes and always drive to the conditions.

Other works planned for the Bundaberg–Miriam Vale Road during the next two years include replacing four timber bridges at Yandaran, Cockatoo, Littabella and Mullet creeks with concrete bridges as part of the Regional Bridge Renewal Program.

Main Roads will also undertake a major upgrade to improve the Booloongie Road intersection.
