Preferred option released for Blacksoil intersection

Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
A plan to raise the Warrego Highway over the future Brisbane Valley Highway and Wulkuraka Connection Road intersection has been chosen as the long-term solution to connect the highways at Blacksoil.
Queensland Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Ipswich West Wayne Wendt released the preferred design today as part of an extensive planning study for the Blacksoil intersection.
Mr Pitt said the option, chosen following two phases of consultation with the local community, would improve travel times as well as safety for motorists and local residents.
"Addressing congestion and safety issues, the preferred option will secure improved access for the community, as well as fast and safe travel for national freight," he said.
"The key feature of the preferred option is improved safety by elevating and separating the Warrego Highway from the Brisbane Valley Highway and Wulkuraka Connection Road intersection.
“This means highway and local traffic will be separated, with faster trips for through motorists and safer access for local residents.”
Community concerns about increasing traffic were taken into consideration, with the ultimate strategic plan including provision for future construction of a separate ramp (flyover) for traffic travelling from the Warrego Highway to the Brisbane Valley Highway. This would be done at a later stage.
Mr Wendt said the plans had drawn on the feedback from community information displays of three options for the Warrego and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection in late 2006.
"Community input into the final design played an important part in the outcome of the project. Several hundred people contacted Main Roads to have their say, and we thank them for their involvement in the planning process,” Mr Wendt said.
“The preferred option has been chosen to provide connectivity to the existing highway as this intersection provides a vital link for the local area as well as south-east Queensland as a whole.
"We think the community will see the preferred option design as a solution to secure, safe travel in the Blacksoil area.”
Mr Pitt invited the community to view the preferred option in the coming weeks.
"We are distributing newsletters detailing the preferred option to local residents, businesses and key stakeholders as well as holding public displays in the area," Mr Pitt said.
People can view the preferred option by visiting community information sessions between Monday, 12 May, and Friday, 20 June 2008, around the Ipswich, Brassall and Fernvale areas (full details listed below).
The community can also receive information via the project website at www.mainroads.qld.gov.au, by emailing aubnewarrego@pb.com.au or freecall 1800 052 722.
The final option decision has been presented to the state and federal government for review and awaits funding approval. This study is part of the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program (SEQIPP).
