Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Sippy Downs goes greener thanks to Main Roads and local school

Main Roads and Chancellor State College have joined together to enliven the southern section of the new Dixon–Claymore Road interchange at Sippy Downs.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said groups of students had started planting a combination of native trees, shrubs and grasses at the new interchange this week.

"Main Roads takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and I'm pleased local students are going to be involved in this initiative," Mr Pitt said.

"The project team has worked closely with the college and the University of the Sunshine Coast since construction started and this partnership will be a key contributor to the project's success.

"This initiative will teach students the importance of environmental management as well as enhancing the visual amenity and landscaping at the interchange and near the college.”

To kick off this venture, about 100 college students underwent safety inductions last week.

Planting will take place on the southern section of the interchange in a triangular area between the on and off ramps and adjacent to the carpark at Chancellor State College.

Chancellor State College principal John Lockhart said he was delighted with the real-life opportunity the greening project provided for students.

"In partnership with the Sippy Downs Community Association, the University of the Sunshine Coast, Main Roads and the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council, it's great to see students and staff involved in a significant project that will have an enormous impact on our broader community," Mr Lockhart said.

"The enhancement to our school environment, pocketed so closely to the Mooloolah National Park and a valuable wildlife corridor, is a true learning experience for students who are reminded daily of the need for us to balance development with a sustainable future."

This work is expected to take a week.

Construction of the new interchange has now entered its final stage and is on track for completion mid year.

Work that will be completed ahead of the interchange opening includes:
• construction of the interchange bridge across the Sunshine Motorway linking Claymore and Dixon roads
• new on and off ramps to the eastbound carriageway of the motorway
• activating traffic signals at the intersection of Sippy Downs Drive and Claymore Road
• construction of the pedestrian and cycle path link to Dixon Road
• landscaping the remainder of the interchange.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council will undertake work at the same time to complete the four-laning of Sippy Downs Drive along the frontage of Chancellor State College, along with the link between the interchange and Dixon Road.

When complete, the interchange will provide a valuable link in the road network servicing the Sippy Downs community.
