The Honourable Robert Schwarten
The process of transforming the Boggo Road Gaol site at Dutton Park into a vibrant, inner-city urban village reached another milestone this week.
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten said Queensland-based Watpac Australia Pty Ltd, the preferred tenderer for the $45.5 million Boggo Road Urban Village Redevelopment, has started earthworks on location.
“Bulldozers are now on the Boggo Road Urban Village site, preparing the way for the creation of a multi-use area for future residential, retail, commercial and recreational facilities,” Mr Schwarten said.
“Infrastructure works will include new roads, footpaths, bicycle paths, public parks, a boulevard and the provision of services such as sewerage, water, gas and electricity.”
The infrastructure works, which are expected to be completed in June 2009, will be followed by the sale of selected residential and mixed-use sites to the private sector for development.
The redevelopment will deliver up to 500 residential units – including studio, one, two and three bedroom accommodation – with 25 percent of these being affordable housing.
“This is an important investment by the Queensland Government, delivering an enormous amount of benefit to the local community, including better public transport options, pedestrian and cycle ways and green space,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The redevelopment retains the historic Boggo Road Gaol building while turning the site into a liveable, connected and sustainable community with affordable housing and unprecedented access to public transport,” he said.
Redevelopment of the Boggo Road site is project managed by Project Services, a business unit of the Department of Public Works, on behalf of the Queensland Government.
Watpac is also overseeing the development of Australia’s first dedicated Ecosciences Precinct at the Boggo Road Urban Village and a new Health and Food Sciences Precinct expanding on existing Queensland Health facilities at Coopers Plains.
