Brisbane beef DNA testing company mooving onwards and upwards

The Brisbane company that developed the world’s first DNA test for tender beef has joined forces with Australia’s largest animal health care company Pfizer Animal Health.

Minister for Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle today congratulated Catapult Genetics for turning the attention of a worldwide leader in animal health research and development.

“Catapult Genetics has put Queensland at the forefront of global agricultural biotechnology – its partnering with Pfizer is fantastic news for the State’s beef industry and its global customers,” Ms Boyle said.

“Catapult Genetics compiled more than 10,000 DNA profiles of cattle from across the country that could potentially pinpoint not only determine the most tender breeds of cattle, but the precise cow that’s carrying Australia’s most tender meat.

“Pfizer Animal Health’s investment in Catapult Genetics is further proof of the quality of the research and development that’s happening in Queensland’s biotechnology sector.”

Catapult Genetics CEO Dr Gerard Davis said Pfizer coming on board was a huge boost to the company.

“Now with Pfizer's added resources and capabilities, we expect livestock producers will start to see an enhanced range of genetic tools. For sheep and beef cattle producers in Australia and NZ, there will be benefits from a continued focus on their needs as well as access to new and improved products," Mr Davis said

President of Pfizer Animal Health Juan Ramon said Pfizer was attracted by the quality of Catapult Genetic’s R&D.

“This is a strategic initiative that places Pfizer at the forefront of livestock gene marker R&D and enhances Pfizer’s ability to offer more complete solutions to global livestock producers,” Mr Ramon said

He said Catapult Genetics would continue to market products and services to their own customers as well as Pfizer Animal Health customers.
